President

Christine PribbernowChristine Pribbernow, CGMP

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors?

I believe my unique qualifications for serving on the National Board stem from serving on the Northern Lights Chapter board as Director and President and I continued my leadership on the National Board as a Director since 2021. The education, networking, and professional development that I’ve received is exclusive and irreplaceable to my membership with SGMP. I am dedicated to continuing the mission of SGMP to amplify the professionalism and importance of the government industry.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

My vision for SGMP is to be the leader and experts of government meetings across the United States. My two ideas for SGMP moving forward include:

  • Focusing on membership offerings and sustainability while expanding to unestablished areas through new Satellite Chapter opportunities.
  • Annual updates and expansion of the CGMP material that will be available to current CGMP holders through a biennial CGMP Congress.

First Vice President

Susan ShaffeteSusan Shaffette, CGMP

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors?

I wholeheartedly support SGMP and its mission. As a contract planner and business owner, I am very familiar with the many perspectives an organization must manage effectively and efficiently: marketing, accounting, scheduling, team management, contracts/proposals, communications and more. I am an enthusiastic team member and experienced within the government meetings industry. I have been working on nonprofit and government events since 1989 yet find exploring new technologies and apps the most exciting parts of my day. I have been a volunteer within SGMP in many capacities, local to national, for the last ten years.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

My vision for SGMP includes growth for all chapters and empowerment for their leadership. My first idea has already begun with the initial satellite chapters. This has been a work of heart helping new groups form. I’d like to continue helping to grow new satellite chapters to serve as starting points for full-fledged chapters across the country. We have some big gaps currently when you map our chapters and we have many professionals to reach out to yet. My second idea would be to grow our chapter leader toolkit with a boost to the library of template documents. We need more base documents and sample forms that can be used for recruiting, meeting publicity, membership notices, satellite formation, social media, agenda planning and more. It is critical to have the tools for leaders so that we can truly serve our members.

Second Vice President

Mark RichardsonMark Richardson, CGMP

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors?

I have had the honor to serve on the National Board as Director and current Treasurer, my experience on the National Board has enriched my knowledge of what is needed moving forward to ensure an ever-existing organization.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

#1. Membership is paramount, without growth we will fade into history, adding to that is the growth of satellite chapters and converting them into their own chapters #2. Financial security, as Treasurer I know our financial status and though we have improved greatly from almost closing our doors during the pandemic, we must grow our reserve both in our checking and investment accounts.

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors?

I am uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors because of my extensive leadership experience, dedication, and active involvement in SGMP since 2014. Over the past decade, I have demonstrated a consistent commitment to advancing the organization’s mission and enhancing the professional development of its members. Since joining SGMP in 2014, I have served on the National Membership Committee, contributing to the recruitment and retention of members and fostering a strong community. My leadership journey includes serving on the Michigan chapter’s board since 2015, where I was appointed Planner Director and later elected to various leadership roles: Planner Director (2016-2018), First Vice President (2018-2020), and Chapter President for two consecutive terms (2020-2024). During my tenure, I successfully led my chapter through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continuity, engagement, and support for our members. In addition to my chapter leadership, I have actively participated at the national level, including serving on the Joint Leadership Taskforce and presenting at its April 2022 meeting. My commitment to professional development is evident through my proctoring and grading of the Certified Government Meeting Specialist (CGMP) exam, earning the CGMP designation in 2019, and recertifying in 2022, earning the Government Meeting Specialist Certificate (GMS) in 2017 and renewing in 2022. I continually strive to improve the planning of government meetings through opportunities provided by SGMP, my chapter, and my employer. Recognizing my contributions, I was honored with the Michigan Chapter’s President Award in March 2020 for exemplary accomplishments and received the prestigious National Sam Gilmer Planner of the Year Award in May 2023. These accolades reflect my dedication to improving the knowledge and expertise of our members through education, networking, and mentorship. My experience, passion, and proven leadership make me well-equipped to serve and contribute meaningfully to the SGMP National Board of Directors.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

My vision for SGMP focuses on strengthening our membership through targeted recruitment and retention efforts while fostering a culture of recognition and engagement. By increasing awareness of SGMP’s value across more states, we can expand our reach and demonstrate how our organization enhances members’ personal and professional growth. 1. To ensure the continued growth and vitality of SGMP, I would prioritize expanding our membership footprint by creating innovative outreach initiatives. This could include hosting virtual informational sessions, collaborating with related organizations, and leveraging social media to highlight success stories of members who have benefited from SGMP. Additionally, I would advocate for the development of mentorship programs that connect new members with experienced professionals to support their integration into the organization and encourage long-term retention.2. Our members are the heart of SGMP, and their contributions deserve recognition. I propose implementing more structured and creative ways to honor volunteerism and member ideas, such as monthly or quarterly spotlights in newsletters or during events. Additionally, I would focus on increasing member involvement by offering accessible volunteer opportunities that align with their skills and interests. This could include forming micro-committees or task forces for short-term projects, allowing members to contribute meaningfully without long-term commitments. By focusing on these initiatives, we can grow SGMP’s membership, increase member satisfaction, and create a more engaged and dynamic community that supports both personal and professional development.

I bring a strong vision for enhancing the future of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP). Here are some key ideas she may focus on, reflecting her commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and professional development:

1. Enhancing Professional Development and Education:

I will place a strong emphasis on continuous learning and professional development with a focus on expanding SGMP’s educational programs, offering more in-depth workshops, webinars, and certifications to meet the evolving needs of government meeting professionals. This could include specialized training on the latest trends in virtual meetings, sustainability, and government-specific regulations.

2. Fostering Inclusivity and Diversity in Government Meetings:

With multiple certifications in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), including the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate, I am passionate about embedding DEI principles into all aspects of meeting planning. I have spoken about the importance of DEI at national conferences and will demand SGMP to focus on further incorporating DEI into its programming, recruitment, and leadership initiatives. My vision includes fostering an environment where all meeting professionals, regardless of background, feel empowered and have access to the resources they need to succeed. I have advocated for inclusivity in events, as evidenced by my work and publications, such as her article “The Future of Events is Inclusivity.” I envision SGMP continuing to lead the charge in making government meetings accessible to all, including people with disabilities. I have an Event Accessibility Strategist Certificate and experience in organizing diverse conferences which shows my dedication to ensuring that SGMP events are welcoming for everyone, regardless of ability or background. This could involve integrating accessibility into every aspect of event planning, from physical space design to virtual experiences.

My vision for SGMP emphasizes creating a more inclusive, diverse, and accessible community for government meeting professionals while ensuring continued professional growth and innovation in the government meeting planning industry.

I believe I am uniquely qualified to serve as an education and programming trustee on Gilmer Institute of Learning based on my extensive career involvement with SGMP in combination with my strong passion for learning, excellent communication skills, and a solid understanding of programming concepts related to SGMP’s core competencies.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

Learning and professional development is foundational in building a successful career. As an education society, everything related to learning and development must remain as SGMP’s true north. As an education & programming trustee, I will continue to build on the vision set forth by our education director and SGMP national leadership, plus bridge the gap across overlapping industry networks to positively impact SGMP in both education as well as greater membership growth.

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP Gilmer Institute of Learning?

Hello, I’ve been a member of SGMP for twenty years and I am still volunteering to serve because I believe in the mission of SGMP. For the past two years, I’ve been serving as the President of the Texas Lone Star Capital Chapter. I’ve played a vital role in relaunching the North Texas Satellite Chapter of SGMP and have extended my leadership to help organize our first SGMP Southwest Leadership Conference for our members in the southwest. I am also the CEO of a local non-profit in Austin, Texas, where the majority of my time is spent raising funds annually. My biggest strength is building and sustaining relationships that forge new partnerships. My motto is "Everyone Wins."

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

I have a very clear vison for SGMP moving forward: 1) Grow SGMP Memberships and 2) Raise up new SGMP Chapters. The best vehicle for helping accomplish these goals are to build strong relationships with individuals seeking to grow in the industry by providing great educational opportunities that include access to CGMP Credentialing.

What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the SGMP National Board of Directors?

I am uniquely qualified to serve on the Gilmer Institute of Learning because of my years of experience on the SGMP National Board as 1st vice president and director and as chapter board president as well as other positions on the local chapter. I am familiar with SGMP governance and understand how SGMP functions on the national and local level. I manage scholarship programs for students at my job, developing and refining the application, selection criteria, and rubric. I’m responsible for the entire process from start to finish and we evaluate it annually to ensure that we are employing best practices to make the process efficient for our students. I often have to deal with situations that are time-sensitive, politically sensitive, and confidential where I have to display good judgment and be adept at solving problems.

Please share your vision and top two ideas for SGMP moving forward.

SGMP is about education and supporting our members through professional and personal development. SGMP is the premier resource for government planners & suppliers through educational and training opportunities at our annual National Education Conference (NEC) and webinars. I would like to broaden efforts to ensure that members who cannot attend the NEC due to financial reasons are aware of scholarship opportunities and understand what is required to apply and earn one, so that they can benefit from the education at the NEC.I also believe it’s important to offer a variety of educational opportunities to meet the needs of our members whether they are at the beginning, middle, or advanced in their careers. Offering different levels of certifications is helpful to each individual’s growth no matter what stage they’re at. SGMP has helped me throughout my career, and I appreciate the education I have received as well as the relationships I have built over the years. I hope my contributions can help others as well and ensure the organization’s success in years to come.
